Self-Employment
IFDC employees are considered self-employed, which has the following implications:
Social Security Tax: Due to IFDC's public, nonprofit international status, U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are classified as self-employed for social security tax liability purposes (e.g., in most private and public employer/employee relationships an employer contributes one-half the effective rate and the employee contributes one-half the rate; as self employed the employee contributes both portions of the tax).
Unemployment Benefits: Also, as a result of IFDC status, its employees are ineligible for unemployment benefits. Accordingly, no unemployment taxes are withheld from the employee.
